Antibalas horns join The Roots @ Global Citizen Fest, Central Park, NYC

 

Last Saturday the horns (Martín Perna-baritone saxophone, Jas Walton-tenor saxophone, Jordan McLean-trumpet and Raymond Mason-trombone) joined the Roots and singers from the FELA musical to perform Fela Anikulapo Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy" at the 2014 Global Citizen NYC Festival. 

It was a beautiful day. Sun shining, the great lawn filled with over 60,000 people, all committed in some way to eliminating global poverty. Also performing were Jay-Z (and special guest Beyoncé), Tiesto, No Doubt with Sting, Alicia Keys, and Carrie Underwood.

9/25/14-NYC: Antibalas performs the music of John Lurie

We're participating in an event called "Strange and Beautiful" celebrating the musician/actor/painter John Lurie.  It goes down in New York on 9/25 at Le Poisson Rouge. Don't know who John Lurie is? Read up HERE.

Since the early 1980s, Lurie has been a major force and inspiration in avant garde jazz, particularly in downtown New York, and has collected and composed for some of the wildest, most talented musicians New York has seen. You may have seen him in any number of films by Jim Jarmusch, or as host of the popular TV series "Fishing With John."

For the past dozen years or so, he has been focusing on painting which has revealed another aspect of his creative brilliance.

At Le Poisson Rouge, we'll be performing a selection of Lurie's compositions for the Lounge Lizards which intersect in various ways with our own music. We haven't done something quite like this before, so expect some beautiful surprises.

We'll be with the group Hellbent, which features several esteemed Lurie veterans including Steven Bernstein, Michael Blake, Calvin Weston, and Marcus Rojas.

We're happy to announce that we have some new music out today. The song "Tattletale" (Parts 1-2), written by keyboard whiz/producer Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah and performed/recorded by Antibalas at the famed Daptone House of Soul in Brooklyn, is available on 45 rpm vinyl as well as MP3 download.

We'll be on the road late summer/fall with Arcade Fire as well as some shows in NYC as we write some new songs, finish old ones, and develop new repertoire for a nationwide tour beginning in late January 2015.
